A History of Kays Theatre Group.
Kays Theatre Group has its origins in the Kays Theatre Club of Kays of Worcester (famous the world over for Kays Catalogue). In 1954 Kays Social Club held a ball/talent contest at the Public Hall in the Cornmarket, Worcester (now a carpark). After this event, several members who took part in the talent contest decided to form a theatrical group. In those days it was staff members entertaining members of staff at the only affordable venue the Cooperative hall in the Trinity (the Swan Theatre was not built at that time). For the next few years KTG presented variety shows, some three act plays and even entered the British Drama League one act play festival. As an experiment one of the shows was half a variety show and half a potted pantomime. As a result of its success and popularity the group embarked on a full length pantomime which became an annual event-indeed Worcester’s only pantomime. When the Swan Theatre opened KTG presented the first performance at the new venue, and we’ve been there ever since. |
